Buffered Securities

What is a "buffered" Investment?

A buffered investment (aka "structured securities contract") links gains to major stock market price indexes while providing a protective buffer that can protect up to as much as a 30% decline in the index(es) chosen. If the stock market price index you have chosen has increased at the end of the term, your account will be credited with 100% of the gains (for shorter terms there may be a "cap"* that limits the gains). If the price index has declined at the end of the term, the buffer will provide protection from loss up to the amount of the buffer.

“Buffered” investments allow investors to potentially profit from the rising prices of major stock market price indexes while providing full or partial protection from downside losses. They may allow more conservative investors the potential for higher gains due to the protective buffers. They also may help reduce fear when markets decline, possibly preventing selling at the wrong time and missing out on future gains.

RILAs (registered index-linked annuities) that offer various structured contracts in a single account and available through major Wall Street firms, may be an option for investors in these uncertain times.
